Manna Monday (well, this week, can it be Tuesday Telling of Manna Monday?!)

Provision through pictures

The morning began with the two of them, Daniel and Tirzah.  Daniel was home; I was sleeping in; they were on the couch curled together watching a movie.  Perfection.

And then?  Homemade bagels.  Oh my.  And the Little One to add the cinnamon sugar topping.

And then?  You will not believe it, but iPhones for Daniel and I.  I can't believe it either.  There we were in the store, Tirzah content on their plush cushions playing with blocks, and we were deciding between old-school phones and iPhones.  How did we decide you might ask?  Rock. Paper. Scissors.  Not even kidding.
So now, we are both owners of iPhones, but extraordinarily enough, we are paying LESS than we were with the other older phones.  But will you hold me accountable?  We do not want to be so attached to our phones that they are our very life. . .  balances and checks must be put in place!
First picture had to be him

And second had to be her

Next a walk by myself to celebrate the first signs of Spring!

Homemade granola bars, with homemade puffed brown rice and date paste

They like it!

Next stop: a newt for a pet.  Yes, not kidding here either.  Daniel was out on a run and so finding one on the trail, he carried it the rest of the way home to surprise Tirzah.  Oh how delightfully surprised she was!  We have named him Newton and created "a whole ecological system for him".

And so it was, Newton became a little friend last night.  When little Jane and her parents came over for dinner last night, Tirzah grabbed Jane's hand and pulled her over to see "my friend Newton!"

However, I don't know if I am ready to call him friend quite yet.  4:30 this morning Daniel goes to find Newton in his little home: not there.  I knew this was going to happen!  My only hope was that he was in Daniel's work bag instead of in my fruit bowl or something like that.  We found him just before Daniel left for work, (praise the Lord for I don't know if I could have picked him up!) hidden by Tirzah's little kitchen.  And so he walked through the day with us: skyping with Anna and Meredith, watching Dora, eating raisins, and talking with Auntie Renee. . .

And to finish the day yesterday: delight in all things common

Twirling and Swirling

What are you LOVING right in this moment??

For me?

LOVING the silence of an afternoon nap

LOVING the rainfall that nourishes the earth

LOVING Earl Grey tea with a splash of almond milk and honey

LOVING reflecting upon deployment, as I write thank you notes: dwelling upon the abundance of blessings we received through friends and family.  You all amazed us with your love and support: Thank you!

LOVING new life on winters dead limbs: the story of Resurrection!  Written into natures rhythm.

LOVING the word from Bible Study Fellowship this morning:
Jacob, using a stone for his pillow in Genesis 28:11.  Our teacher called it: "Jacob hitting rock bottom."
But you know what?  That is the very moment when God meets him and promises His Presence and tells of His love.
At rock-bottom.
God loves sinners!
This moment, is the very house of God.
Jacob: the story of Redeeming Grace (to read his story, look to Genesis 25-50)

Tirzah is LOVING, (and I am too!) The Tale of Peter Rabbit.  It is her go to book for these past few days and we are both enjoying it immensely.  What a lovely little story!

LOVING The Joy of Juicing by Gary Null

Daniel picked this up for me at the library and I have been really enjoying some of the recipes.  He includes recipes for just juices, but also recipes for entrees and desserts that also use fresh juice.  For example, Tirzah and I made this delicious oatmeal yesterday morn using fresh apple juice.  You juice 2 apples, and then cook your oatmeal in a mixture of the juice and water.  It adds great flavor and nutrition to a simple morning meal.

Tirzah's delights: worms!  (we have a plastic jug filled with dirt, rocks, and yes... worms)  Slugs!  (found one the other day but ended up killing it accidentally. . .) and caterpillars!  (found one on our walk on Saturday morning, put it on a tree branch and walked the rest of the way to the park with our new friend.  Tirzah was talking so sweetly to him: she put him down and told him to watch her go down the slide, ok?  And then after the slide, she crawled with him.  Come crawl wif me!  Oh precious!)

LOVING watching the redemption of their relationship unfold before my eyes.  Thank you for all your prayers!  They are really growing together and it is a wonder to see.

LOVING Daddy-daughter silly moments: they are the absolute best part of my day.  To see my husband home and to see him LOVING on our daughter and our daughter LOVING him in return is simply the best.  They sing and they twirl, they jump and they wrestle, and oh how they giggle!

LOVING all the grace moments:

Sustained in the Lord's joy and strength
Sunshine!
Daniel surprise!  Home at 11:30
Family exercise date
The quiet while making dinner
Daddy-daughter car wash date
The sunshine, warm and golden pouring through the window, catching all the kitchen aflame
Tulips!  From a friend
Playing catch with Tirzah
Her facial expression as she catches
Library treasures and surprises from my Husband

LOVING  for Pumpkin and Spice Muffins from The Joy of Juicing book.  Although I adapted it and made it Carrot and Apple Spice Muffins.  It is really hearty, really nutritious, and really good!  I LOVE that it uses dates, apple juice, and banana as the sweetener: a hit for Mama, Daddy, and toddler too.  We have been loving them toasted, with a touch of butter, a touch of honey, and a little sprinkle of cinnamon on top.  Let me know if you try them!

Preheat oven to 350
In the oven, toast 3/4 C almond halves to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.  Set aside.

2 or 3 large carrots juiced (to get 1/2 C of juice)
2  apples juiced (to get 3/4 C pulp... could also use carrot pulp)
2 eggs beaten
1/2 C plus 2 T coconut oil melted
1/2 C chopped dates
1 banana mashed
1 t vanilla
In medium-sized mixing bowl, combine the above ingredients until just mixed.

2 C whole wheat flour (or the original calls for spelt flour)
1 t baking powder
1 t baking soda
1 t ground nutmeg
1/2 t ground allspice
1 or 2 t cinnamon
Sift together in a small mixing bowl

Add the dry mixture into the wet mixture. Stir in the toasted nuts and 1/2 C raisins

Pour batter into greased muffin tins, and bake for 25-30 minutes.

Enjoy!

Vacuuming

Here is what we are Loving today!

LOVING household chores with Tirzah.  I know now that every time I go to get the vacuum it will not be just a 5 minute chore!  Now she will want to sit on it and ride and then she will want to vacuum too! But who cares?  Right?  LOVING life together and LOVING teaching her how to care for a home.

Tirzah is LOVING her new found skill!

LOVING the sunshine today

LOVING this pillow that I made!  My dear friend Alison found the pattern by Amy Butler and we got together while Renee was here and had a wonderful time crafting!  I am really excited about it!  I need to put more stuffing in it... for when an adult sits down, they fall straight to the floor almost!  But Tirzah can sit and bounce on it and we have leaned against if for afternoon reading time and it is just perfect.

Tirzah is LOVING Annie's macaroni and cheese.  She basically made it the other night when we took it over to a friend's house!  Perhaps she will be a better macaroni and cheese chef than I am: my claim to fame from my babysitting years is that the noodles were crunchy!  Poor Kels is still scarred to this day... and she is in college!

LOVING Tirzah's new favorite treat: a "shroom!"  Or in other words. . . a marshmallow :)

LOVING forever and always my husband and my best friend, our very favorite Soldier

This is the day after he proposed!!

Sweet Tirzah

Yesterday evening I felt so sick.

We returned home from the market with our good friends, and I had felt a little sick all day, but for sure after the market I felt so nauseous.  I grabbed a pillow and a blanket and simply curled into the fetal position, right on the floor by the kitchen table.

Tirzah was busy stacking her blocks, her new favorite pastime, and I was so grateful to the Lord that she was able to play by herself, quietly and well, for that hour or so that I was on the ground.

I always cry when I am sick: I absolutely hate being sick.  So of course I was shedding those silent tears and just missing my husband dreadfully.  Tirzah made me weep even harder.  Not over self-pity because of my sickness, but because she is the sweetest little girl in the world.  I am know I am biased, but I can't possibly imagine a more compassionate little one a half year old.

She smiled at me when I laid down with my head on the pillow.  And it was almost like she knew she needed to play by herself.  I laid down close, so I could exclaim over her 8 blocks high towers.  And when I sat up to get a block for her, she came over and patted the pillow like almost telling me, "Mama, lay down.  You need to rest."  At one moment, she came over and knelt down by my face, giggling and trying to make me laugh.  She bent down and kissed my forehead and then just went on her merry way.  Oh how I cried those silent tears even harder!  She is the sweetest.

I managed to get her in bed and then walk up the street to get some ginger tea and crystalized ginger from the neighbors.  After a shower, I too, managed to crawl in bed and get a long night's rest.  Today, praise the Lord, I am feeling so much better and am able to eat again!

Needless to say, I had not the strength to write last night about What I'm Loving Wednesday, so let me share a bit now, of what this beautiful daughter and her Mama have been LOVING:

Tirzah is absolutely LOVING these blocks!  We actually bought them because I am doing a project with them, which I can't exactly share. . .  (the recipients of these are blog readers too!), but here is the link for the idea.  But Tirzah has attached herself to these blocks.  First she helped me paint them, and now she spends most of her time at home here, stacking them and re-stacking them.

LOVING the sunshine these past days

LOVING preparing a package for my husband

LOVING that my brother is coming in tomorrow to spend the weekend with us!

LOVING these videos of sweet Tirzah.  Daniel, Lovie, I hope you enjoy these!  I took these just for you. . .

LOVING Tirzah just creating and cooking away.  She had coconut, a little sugar, oats, and water and played and "baked" for minutes on end.  It was really fun to see her creative side and her imagination!

Always, always, always, and probably the most ever this day, I am LOVING my husband, who is away, faithfully serving

Whipped Cream

Grace just for today.  A perfect manifestation of His mysteriously holy and perfect ways.  Have you seen His grace that was just for today?  How He provided, yet again, just what was needed.  Be it strength in a tough moment or a financial need or protection, think how He provided and marvel.
Just simply marvel.

I look back over the weekend and I see Him providing in those days too.

In a Mother's Day spent with just my daughter.  And isn't that celebration enough?  To be hand in hand with the one who in fact makes me a Mother and calls me Mother.  Granted, I cried and wept and said aloud that I deserve something different.  But who am I to say that to the One who made me?  The One who created me and calls me child.  And even as I reflected back upon those shameful words I spoke at 6 in the morning, yet still I felt a whisper: "Just worship me now.  Don't fret; just worship me now."

May we worship now as we recount the ways He has provided

A cherished Mother's Day:
Morning spent at the pier in Olympia: soy latte for Mama, park for baby girl, swimming in the sound for Elliott, blueberry danish for baby girl, scone with strawberry jelly for Mama, and a treat of marigolds and basil for Mama

Brunch with friends

Phone calls with family

Sunshine

When I was pulled over, because I was talking on the phone, I only received a warning (yes, that's right.  Pulled over on Mother's Day!)

Riding our bike to church with the sunshine on our backs and the warm breeze in our faces

Strawberry shortcakes... well, more like just whipped cream, on the front porch during sunset (that was my favorite part of the day!)

And as I look back over today, what a blessing this day has been to me.  Mainly because of one beautiful story of His faithfulness.
So there we were, Tirzah and I.  We had just arrived at church last evening after riding our bikes the two miles to arrive.  I was grabbing our things out of the trailer and noticed that my purse was absolutely soaked.  Like dripping with water.  Not only was my purse soaked, my phone was soaked.  A damaged phone is normally a big deal, but when you are anticipating a call from your husband who is deployed and whom you have not talked to in two weeks, is devastating.  Truly, I almost had a panic attack right there in church.  I almost had to leave, at several moments, and rush to the hallway to allow my deluge of tears to come.  Luckily, I was tasked with a purpose of being a "stand-in nanny" and hold one of pastor's twins while he dedicated the babies in church.  If not for being in front of the congregation, I truly might have lost it.
I prayed and prayed most fervently that my husband would not call.  Funny, that is just the opposite of what I had been praying every other night.  And so I slept through the night with His peace and woke this morning and headed to the Verizon store.
A new phone now and not even an hour later, while I am on the phone with Marlene, a call comes in and I have to take it for I don't recognize the number.
It's him!
And so it was at that moment that the flood began.

What a small gift from a hugely faithful God.

(And our sweet Soldier is doing well!  He needs our prayers constantly.  He loves his platoon and loves working alongside his sergeant.  He would like prayer in regards to being the "middle-man" between his Captain and his platoon.  He said he has felt covered in prayers and has felt such peace.  Praise God!)

And here is his address, if you have a mind to send him anything.  He said he was really ready for some refined sugar!!  AND, his birthday is the 23rd of this month...

1st LT. Shear, Daniel
Task Force 4-23 IN BN B Co. 3rd Platoon
FOB Sakari Kariz
ATO AE 09370
(COP AJK)

And these are just more moments of grace to share.  She was absolutely precious today.
These overalls are ones her Daddy wore when he was a child.
And these cutest shoes ever, Toms from her Auntie Renee.

Here she is shopping around the kitchen.  She used my Verizon bag and put whatever she could find: a spoon, her shoes, an ice cream scoop, a cheese grater, measuring spoons, and a roll of Elliott's doggie poopie bags!

Simple Rocks

How good it feels to be back writing!  Thank you once again, for your patience with my absence in this blog.  Hopefully we are back into our normal rhythms and will have the time and space to write and share our hearts with you.  Thank you, as well, for reading.  How humbling it is to know you stop by...

Have you seen the Lord provide for you in these past weeks?  Have you been nourished in His daily provisions?

The past weeks have been a bounty of His provision: time with family, laughter, date nights, sunshine, delicious food, gifts, adventures...

Just today we have been so blessed with grace after grace.  Daniel has the whole week off!  What a wonder to have all this time together especially as we prepare for the next season of our lives.  Daniel blessed me this morn with a full morning's rest: this Mama didn't get out of bed until 9:30!    We spent the day in the sunshine, taking the narrow trail that leads to the Water's edge.  This trail requires you to hold tightly to the rope that is attached at the beginning of the trail and then at the end: such a steep incline requires you to hold fast!  After crossing the railroad tracks and down yet another slope with a rope railing, you land upon one of the Sound's rocky shores.

It captures you breathless with it's beauty and offers bountiful adventures for our family to explore.

A way in which we saw His provision today?  Simple really, but aren't some of life's most precious gifts magnanimous in their simplicity?

Rocks.  We beheld His provision of rocks and what a wonder to consider how many thousands of rocks just this one beach held.

Rocks and the countless activities they provide for those who get down on their knee to see

And we felt nourished, energized, free as we climbed that steep incline back to the trail that led us home.  God's gifts are meant for that, to refresh, to nourish.  Even when the gifts are so simple.  Simple as a little rock.  But the beauty of the gift is unwrapped when you sit child-like, sand caked to your skin, and eyes alive to perceive the endless wonder in everything that surrounds.  Everything which we don't deserve but yet are freely given.

Red haired ponytails and sliding in sunshine

Here is  What I'm Loving on this gorgeous day in the Pacific Northwest!

LOVING all things fabric.  Need I say anything else?

LOVING our new favorite park that we found just yesterday.

LOVING Tirzah wearing shoes

LOVING the process of her courage.  When we first arrived at the park, she did not want me to put her down.  So we climbed the stairs together and we went down the twin blue slides, side by side, holding hands.  This turned into climbing the slide (my hand on her little butt pushing her up!), which turned into her going down just holding me hand while I stood to the side.  That turned into climbing the stairs and positioning herself on the slide... head first!  I think that is her favorite way... she also enjoys going on her tummy with her feet first!  What an adventurous side she has and I am LOVING it!!

LOVING this tea set that my Mama sent to me.  It is beautiful in the afternoon light.  It was a wedding present to them, almost 40 years ago.

LOVING that on Monday, while Alison and our daughters went for our Joanne's fabric date, we stopped at the Starbucks in downtown DuPont.  The sweet girl at the drive-through window was glowing as she exclaimed: "The person in front of you bought your drinks!"  What a blessing!  She went on to say that this "chain" had been going on for about 10 minutes!  So Aunt Carol, we used your gift card to buy the gentleman behind us his drink as well!  Absolutely LOVING that someone just decided to do something nice and then how the Lord multiplied that gift over and over again.  I wonder how long the chain continued?

LOVING these dried flowers Daniel had waiting for me when Tirzah and I returned home from Florida.

LOVING Tirzah's red hair in a ponytail

LOVING contemplating the spiritual truths behind gardening as I dirty my hands in the soil.  Can anything good grow without the preparation of the soil?

LOVING raincoats together

LOVING the gifts that are endless from HIM

Baby Steps

Here is What I'm Loving Today!

LOVING that I was finally able to capture a video of Tirzah walking!!  This was from yesterday.  She is walking all the time now!

LOVING that she can't help but go where her feet take her... she has no sense of directing herself yet

LOVING the way she holds her arms up, for that extra support and balance

LOVING her proud smile

LOVING the empty fruit bowl, waiting to be filled with this afternoon's produce pick-up

LOVING the victory He has granted over frustrations with her naps!  This truly is a huge area where He has worked and I am SO thankful!  I have not known the despair for several weeks and I am humbly grateful for His victorious work.  Baby steps each more every day giving thanks for all things: even short naps.

LOVING this simple yet delicious recipe for chicken.  I just pulled a batch out of the oven, for this afternoon's activities will leave not a moment for dinner preparation.  I think I will serve it over barley, to add some whole grain goodness and crunch.

Chicken bake with Potatoes, Thyme, and Lemon

Preheat to 450

Place together in a 9x 13 pan:

3-3 1/2 Lb. Chicken (our favorite is with thighs, but I just made it with Organic drumsticks and it looks great)
1 Lb new potatoes- halved or quartered
1 red onion cut into chunks
1 head of garlic, cloves separated and unpeeled (the recipe calls for unpeeled, but I peel ours... more time at the prep but definitely more enjoyment in the meal!)
1 lemon, quartered

Mix together: 1/4 c olive oil and 2 T balsamic vinegar (I am a total sauce girl so I usually double this for one batch: leaves lots of delicious juices!)

Pour vinegar mixture evenly over all the ingredients and sprinkle with:

Salt
Pepper
Thyme (this is what makes the dish!  We use ground, but fresh sprigs would be delicious as well)

Roast about 50 minutes until chicken is nicely browned and potatoes are tender

LOVING the series by Brock and Bodie Thoene: The Zion Covenant.  There are 6 books in this series and I am just about to finish the fourth.  I can hardly put it down and would most assuredly recommend them.  Thanks Sister for letting me borrow them!

LOVING these gifts from His list of graces that is endless

765.  She went back to sleep

766.  Ray of light on a fresh loaf of bread

770.  Seeing the mountains so clearly

771.  One wheat husk amidst all seeds

773.  Girl Scout cookies at the door

776.  Daniel serving me in my sickness

777.  Hot chamomile tea with honey

779.  Warmth of flour freshly ground

Who

Here is what I'm LOVING (albeit a day late) today, this day that He has made and in which we rejoice

LOVING the moment Daddy comes through the door and I get to be a part of this

LOVING blood oranges

LOVING, as a family, reading a psalm after each meal shared.  LOVING how she bends low and close over her Bible, the one my neighbor Kathleen gave us, the one she found at a garage sale.  And I LOVE how she whispers to the pictures over which her finger touches, pointed.

LOVING that our first bulk order from Azure Standard, our new co-op, came in!  Right now in our pantry we have: 50 pounds of wheat berries, a gallon of honey as well as a gallon of molasses, 1 pound of baking soda and vital wheat gluten, 25 pounds of rolled oats, and a jar of coconut oil.  Just think of all we can make from these items!  It makes me so excited.

LOVING this blanket that our dear friend Jonelle hand-made for Tirzah's first birthday.

LOVING ideas for simplistic living, like monthly menu plans!  I had so much fun thinking of and creating this menu plan.  I LOVE that there is room for creativity and using what you have on hand (like in the soups and what not), but I also LOVE the structure and that I can just look at the plan to know what we are having for dinner.  LOVING too that with this plan, Tirzah and I can go grocery shopping every two weeks, as opposed to every week.  So...

Winter Monthly Menu Plans (click on darker colored words to see recipes... more recipes will be posted soon!)  These are mainly dinner menus, but I have a goal in mind to have lunch and breakfast menus at some time or other.  I found this idea on Passionate Homemaking.

Then add 2 eggs and 2 t vanilla

Stir in 8 oz chocolate chips
(We also add about 1/2 C rolled oats)

Bake at 350 for 16-20 minutes

Absolutely LOVING these lyrics from Tom Wuest and his Song of Ascent.  Take a moment to read these slowly and tenderly for He who does all this,
adores you and
LOVES you

Who can  count the sand and stars?
Who sets planets on true course?
Who casts hoarfrost on sleeping vines?
Who spins snowflakes from drops of rain?

Who breathes upon the high seas?
Who makes waters teem with fish?
Whose hand will save us from the deep
And set our ship in harbors safe?

Who guides bees to orchard blooms?
Who sows seeds for raven's young?
Who satisfies our ongoing souls
With finest wheat and wine to drink?

Who binds up the wounded heart?
Who will beautify the meek?
Whose love will seal our land with peace?
Whose song will e'er be on our lips?
